What to Look For in a Dynamic QR Code Generator
July 10, 2026
Every dynamic QR code generator claims the same three features: dynamic links, analytics, and branding. The difference is in the details — and the details decide whether your codes still work five years from now.
The must-have list
1. Codes never expire
The biggest scam in the QR industry is generators that let you create a code for free, then expire the redirect after 14 days unless you pay. If a generator doesn't say 'codes never expire' up front, assume they do.
2. Editable after printing
Sounds obvious. It's the whole point of dynamic. But some tools charge extra for the edit itself, or cap the number of edits per month. Look for unlimited edits on every paid plan.
3. Real per-scan analytics, not just a counter
'Track scans' means different things. A counter tells you 47 people scanned it. Real analytics tells you 32 were in the US on iPhone, 12 in Germany on Android, and 3 were bots. That difference is huge for marketing decisions.
4. Custom domain support
Your dynamic short link is only as trustworthy as its domain. Codes on qrgen-free.tk look sketchy; codes on links.yourbrand.com don't. Business-tier features on most tools; worth it if you're on packaging.
5. Data portability
Can you export your codes and their scan history if you leave? If the answer is 'no', the tool owns your marketing history. Look for CSV export and, ideally, a real API.
The nice-to-haves
- Smart routing (device, country, time-of-day).
- A/B splits so you can test destinations.
- SVG export for print (PNG stretches; SVG doesn't).
- Logo in the center without breaking scannability.
- Webhook or Zapier support for scan events.
Red flags
- 'Free forever' but a watermark on downloads.
- No public pricing page.
- No mention of GDPR, no privacy policy, or a US-only privacy policy.
- Sign-up requires a credit card 'for verification'.
- No way to delete your account.
The one question to ask
Before committing to any tool, ask their support: 'If I stop paying, what happens to my codes?' A good answer is: 'They keep working with a data-export path, and read-only dashboard access continues for 90 days.' A bad answer is: 'They break immediately.' The reply tells you exactly how the company thinks about its customers.
Where QR Lift lands
