How to Create a QR Code for Free (Without the Watermark Trap)
August 1, 2026
Making a QR code should cost nothing, and for most use cases it genuinely does. The catch is that the word 'free' means three very different things across generators, and only one of them is safe to print.
Create your first free code in five steps
- Open the generator and pick your content type — URL, WiFi, vCard, SMS, email, or geo location.
- Paste the destination including https:// — a missing protocol is the number one reason a code fails on older scanners.
- Choose static (permanent, no account) or dynamic (editable and trackable, free account required).
- Style it: brand colors, corner shape, and a center logo. Keep contrast high — dark pattern on light background scans best.
- Download SVG for print or PNG for screen, then scan-test with two different phones before you publish it anywhere.
The three kinds of 'free'
- Genuinely free static codes — the destination is baked into the pattern, nothing can expire, and no account is needed. This is the correct free.
- Free trial dynamic codes — editable and trackable for 7 to 14 days, then the redirect dies and your printed code 404s. Avoid for anything physical.
- Free with watermark — the generator's logo sits in the middle of your code, and removing it costs money later.
QR Lift's free tier is the first kind plus three permanent dynamic codes with no watermark and no expiry, so a small campaign can run indefinitely without a card.
What free will not get you
Free stops being enough once you need scan analytics beyond the basics, more than a handful of editable destinations, bulk CSV generation, vector PDF print packs, or a branded short domain. Those are paid features on every serious platform, ours included.
Print-safety checklist
- Export SVG or PDF, never a stretched PNG — raster edges blur at print size.
- Minimum 2 cm square for handheld distance; scale up 1 cm per additional metre of scan distance.
- Leave a quiet zone of at least four modules of blank space around the pattern.
- Add a short call to action underneath — 'Scan for the menu' lifts scan rates measurably.
Next step
If the code is going anywhere physical, make it dynamic before you print. Editing a destination takes five seconds; reprinting five thousand flyers does not.
