How to Make a QR Code (Free, in Under 60 Seconds)
July 16, 2026
Making a QR code takes less than a minute. What takes longer — and what most guides skip — is deciding what kind of code to make, because that decision is permanent for static codes and changeable forever for dynamic ones.
The 60-second version
- Open a QR code generator (QR Lift's free plan works — see /qr-code-generator).
- Pick the content type: URL, WiFi, vCard, Email, SMS, or Location.
- Paste the link (or fill in the fields for WiFi / contact).
- Optional: add brand colors and a center logo.
- Download PNG for web or SVG for print. Scan-test with your phone before you send it anywhere.
Static or dynamic — pick before you generate
A static code bakes the destination into the pattern. It's free forever and works offline, but you can't edit it or see who scanned. A dynamic code encodes a short link you control, so you can edit the destination and track scans — see our deeper breakdown at /blog/dynamic-vs-static-qr-codes.
Rule of thumb: if you're printing more than 100 copies, or you'd ever want to know how it performed, make it dynamic.
Making a QR code for a specific thing
For a link or website
Paste the full URL including https://. That's it. If the URL might change later (Beta URL, seasonal landing page), use dynamic and skip the reprint later.
For a Google Form
In the form, click Send → the link icon → Shorten URL, copy it, and paste into the generator. If you're likely to edit the form URL, wrap it in a dynamic code.
For a PDF
Upload the PDF to Drive, Dropbox, or your site, copy the public link, and turn that link into a QR code. Dynamic lets you replace the PDF without reprinting.
For WiFi
Pick the WiFi content type, enter SSID, password, and encryption (WPA/WPA2 for most home networks). Scanning connects the phone automatically on iOS and Android — no app needed.
For a business card
Use vCard. Fill in name, phone, email, company, and site — scanning saves the contact directly. Details in our /qr-types/vcard-qr-code guide.
Free vs paid — what actually costs money
Static QR codes are free forever anywhere reputable. What costs money is dynamic codes, scan analytics, custom branding on the short domain, and bulk generation. QR Lift's free plan includes three dynamic codes with full analytics — enough to test before committing.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the scan test. Print at the actual final size and scan from the actual final distance.
- Low contrast between foreground and background — keep it above 3:1.
- Oversized center logo. Under 25% of the code area is safe.
- Using a static code for a URL you're likely to change. That reprint bill hurts.

Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which One Should You Use?
Static QR codes are permanent and free forever. Dynamic QR codes are editable and trackable. Here's exactly when each one makes sense.

You can only change a QR code's destination if it's dynamic. Here's how it works, why it's possible, and how to convert a static code to a dynamic one.
